What are the port terminals like? Are they like airports? Are there places to eat and will the employees be able to speak english? On average, when is check in time for the cruise ship and is it quick?
I have cruised out of Barcelona twice and actually have another cruise departing from there later this year. The cruise port is about 20 to 30 minutes by taxi from the airport. About $35-40 Euros depending upon the traffic. The cruise port is right downtown and to get to it you cross a short bridge over an inland waterway. The terminal is very modern and on both of my previous cruises from there, one on Royal Caribbean and the other on NCL, the check in was quick.
The personnel at the pier do speak English and so communication is not a problem. You should be sure to have your luggage tags on your bags before you get to the pier because the porters will meet you at the taxi drop and take your bags to the ship. You should tip them $1 per bag. The terminal has multiple check in lines, maybe 20 to 30 open and the check in goes very quickly if you have completed all of the pre-cruise information on-line or my mail and printed your boarding pass. The terminal is otherwise very modern with multiple waiting rooms, nice restrooms, a gift shop, but I don't recall seeing an eating place because lunch is always ready on ship as soon as you board. The cruise line will probably have water and juice and maybe cookies for you while waiting to check in. They had those both times I was there.
You will go through a security station just like the airport before you board the ship. All of your carry-on stuff will go on a scanner belt and you walk through a metal detector just like at the airport. When we cruised out of Barcelona we flew in a day early and stayed at a hotel. Both times we left the hotel about 11:00 AM and arrived at the port before noon and were on the ship about noon. Check in is quick because of all of the stations available. That's the time that you can board, regardless of whether your cabin is ready. Lunch will be ready.
