I am in my 3rd year of a Recreation Management degree. I am very interested in pursuing a career in special event management when I graduate (or at least gaining some real world experience to someday be able to work in that field). I have two summer job offers, one at Disney World and the other aboard a well known cruise ship. I need some suggestions on what could possibly benefit me the most and provide me with better experience for the event management world. Any advice/suggestions would be great! Thank you

Cruise ships do not have to follow US laws.
You are not protected by US laws in case something happens to you as a single woman.
Also cruise ships don’t follow US wage laws – they don’t have to.
You could earn as little as $2/ hour.
Also in a ship, you will be in a small cramped room, possibly with roomates.
You are not allowed to mingle with the passengers in your off-duty time, and you will be limited to roam in a small recreation area.
Cruise ships may sound fun to work in – but remeber you will be governed by another country, and "stuck" in a ship with forerighners that love to make $1/ hour.
Be careful what you wish for.

Well that depends on your summber job ‘title’.
If your going to dress up in a Minnie Mouse suit, then that is probably not your best bet. If your going to actually be working with events, then that would be the obvious course you would take.
Now the differences (if they both are event management based) that you should ask yourself.
Are you doing the start to finish on the event?
Will you be working with large, med, or small events?
What types of events will you be working with?
If you are confident in yourself, then you will want to take on medium to large events where you are the overseer of the project and gaining the most credibility. Don’t settle for the less experience just because it’s experience, a persons portfolio means a lot in the business world.
